After the great success of the first Sino-German Symposium on Biomedical Photonics in Lübeck last year, the second symposium was held on September 18-19, 2024, at the Xi’an Jiaotong University. The symposium attracted more than 60 scientists from 15 institutions, including the University of Lübeck, Medical Laser Center Lübeck GmbH, Hamburg University of Technology, China’s top 10 Universities like Xi'an Jiaotong University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and companies like Vivolight Medical Device & Technology Co., Ltd. (Vivolight).
Among the speakers of the 26 talks, there were 5 Fellows of the Optical Society of America and 5 National Distinguished Young Scholars (one of the most reputed scientific achievements in China). The Symposium was chaired by Prof. Zhenxi Zhang from Xi’an Jiaotong University and Prof. Alfred Vogel from BMO, Lübeck.
Besides scientific exchanges at the symposium, the 13 scientists of the University of Lübeck visited the Innovation Harbour Campus of Xi'an Jiaotong University (iHarbour) and two local biomedical companies - Vivolight and Xi’an Tianlong Science and Technology Ltd. (Tianlong).
Scientific visits also went beyond Xi’an to Beijing, Qingdao, and Shenzhen. With an invitation of Prof. Liangyi Chen and Prof. Peng Xi at Peking University, Prof. Gereon Hüttmann, Prof. Sebastian Karpf and Dr. Xiaoxuan Liang visited the Institute of Future Technology and the National Biomedical Imaging Center (NBIC), which aims to be one of the 5 worldwide leading institutions for biomedical imaging. Under the invitation of Dr. Jianan Li, Prof. Robert Huber and Dr. Ralf Brinkmann joined a mini academy-enterprise seminar on OCT in two OCT companies, Tsinghua University and the National Innovation Center for Advanced Medical Devices. Prof. Alfred Vogel was invited by Prof. Ye Tian to visit the Ocean University of China in Qingdao and by Prof. Liangyi Chen to visit Peking University.
The symposium and scientific visits are sponsored by the Sino-German Mobility Program (M-0063). BMO and the Xi’an group have collaborated for over 20 years, yielding significant results. The visits gave the team of BMO an excellent impression of the flourishing field of biomedical optics in China, which has now reached a world-class level and lays the foundation for future cooperation.
