Prof. Claude Boccara is one of the pioneers of optical coherence tomography (OCT). He invented Full-Field OCT, which, based on a simple light bulb and a microscope, provides the highest optical resolution of all OCT devices. This technology was commercialized in 2009 by the start-up LLTech (http://www.lltechimaging.com) and promises great potential in imaging of histological samples to assist fast diagnosis of cellular and morphological scale pathologies, such as cancer.
Claude Boccara draduated from the Ecole Supérieure d'Optique in 1965 and began his scientific career studying Dichroism during his Ph.D. He then worked at the École Polytechnique and the University of California at Los Angeles. He taught at the ESPCI ParisTech1 from 1969 onwards and succeeded Jacques Badoz as a professor of optics and directed ESPCI's physical optics, solid-state physics, instrumentation and surfaces and superconductors laboratories. He succeeds Jacques Lewiner as Scientific Director of the school in 2001.
Besides his seminal work in optical coherence tomography Claude Boccara contributed significantly to optics and imaging in the areas of polarized light, photothermal imaging, detection by mirage effect, near-field optical microscope, optical tomography.
